Chemical Peels, Microdermabrasion and Dermabrasion in Sydney for Healthy, Glowing Skin

At Silkwood Medical, our skincare professionals perform a variety of treatments for younger, more luminous looking skin, including laser skin resurfacing, FotoFacial™ IPL, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. Patients at our Sydney practice often choose to have one of these skin treatments after undergoing facial cosmetic surgery, such as facelift or eyelid surgery, in order to enhance their rejuvenating results.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is designed to refresh the appearance of the skin. Using a technique similar to "sand papering", dermabrasion can be used to smooth out wrinkles and to improve the texture of pockmarked skin resulting from severe acne. It reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the mouth, but can be used on the whole face to improve texture, scarring, and wrinkles. Dermabrasion treatment can result in tighter and smoother skin.

The Dermabrasion Procedure

Dermabrasion is usually performed with a sedative to make you drowsy but anaesthetic may be administered, depending on the extent of the procedure. The mechanism of dermabrasion comprises controlled ablation of the epidermis and outer dermis. This results in regeneration of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) and the stimulation of new collagen formation in the dermis (the middle layer of the skin).

Recovery after Dermabrasion

After a dermabrasion treatment, new skin begins to form immediately underneath the treated area. It may be red at first, but will gradually subside to a pinkish colour over the following weeks to months. You should be up and about immediately after the procedure, but plan on taking it easy for a week or so. Avoid dirty or strenuous and tiring activities. Occasionally, full healing may take three to six months. It is important to avoid direct sunlight during this time to prevent blotchy colouring. You will be able to wear makeup after seven to 10 days. After about two weeks, you may return to work and gradually resume your normal activities.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion improves poor, dull skin texture and softens "expression" lines on the forehead and around the mouth. The treatment is performed to reduce fine lines on your cheeks, smooth pigment changes or skin discolouration, and improve acne and acne scarring. Microdermabrasion is especially beneficial when performed as an adjunctive therapy to accelerate or maintain other skin renewal treatments such as laser therapy, Retin-A® therapy or glycolic therapies. The treatment may also be used on your chest, neck, arms and hands.

The Microdermabrasion Procedure

Microdermabrasion is a fast, non-invasive, virtually painless procedure with minimal discomfort. The treatment can take as little as half an hour and requires no topical or local anaesthesia. During the procedure, a steady, powerful stream of fine diamond crystals are delivered to your skin using a fine "sandblaster". This showers your face with sterile micro-particles to abrade or rub off the very top skin layer, then vacuums up the particles and dead skin cells. In most cases, a minimum of five treatments, seven to 10 days apart, are required.

Recovery after Microdermabrasion

Patient satisfaction with microdermabrasion is consistently and overwhelmingly positive. Several sessions are required for optimal results. However, after just one session your skin will feel smoother and cleaner. The treatment involves practically no downtime.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are facial treatments that restore dull, wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented or sun-damaged facial skin and treat light acne scarring. There is an enormous range of chemical peels available at our cosmetic surgery practice, varying from light to deep. Skin peels cause an even, controlled shedding of several layers of damaged cells. The new cells that appear during your healing process produce a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin surface with a more even colour. Lighter peels resurface and retexturise the skin and are usually performed as a series of treatments. Deeper peels are usually one-offs and are a more intensive treatment.

The Chemical Peels Procedure

The most commonly used chemical peels are glycolic acid (fruit acid) peels and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels. During treatment, the chemical solution is used to peel away the top layers of your skin. Chemical peels can be used on your entire face or on specific regions. Results vary according to age, skin condition, sun damage, smoking, climate and use of homecare. Peels are often combined with other facial procedures to optimise your skin's texture.

Recovery after Treatment

During and after treatment, you may experience some discomfort and sensitivity. This will depend on the strength of the peel. The initial effect of a light peel is similar to a slight sunburn and you should be able to return to work immediately. Deeper chemical peels may cause a more intense sunburned appearance, which may require up to a week off work.

ProFractional™

Our practice features ProFractional™, one of the newest laser treatments on the market to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne and post-traumatic scars, freckles, age spots and sun damage. Treatment with ProFractional™ is tailored to address your skincare needs and goals.

The ProFractional™ Procedure

ProFractional™ uses laser energy to stimulate the skin's natural healing process and promote the production of new collagen. This helps to plump up and smooth out wrinkles, and clear up scars and other discolorations on the skin. ProFractional™ can be used on virtually any area of the body. The most common treatment areas include the face, neck, hands, and chest. The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. ProFractional™ can be combined with other skincare treatments, such as the MicroLaserPeel™ for optimal results. Most patients require multiple treatments to achieve their desired results.

Recovery after ProFractional™ Treatment

Because ProFractional™ is a laser treatment, there is little-to-no downtime required and a short recovery time. Immediately after treatment, you may experience mild redness of the skin, which resembles a slight sunburn. After three to five days, you can start wearing makeup again and return to work. Your skin may be more sensitive so you should avoid direct sun exposure and use some level of sun protection after ProFractional™ treatment.

MicroLaserPeel™

MicroLaserPeel™  is a treatment that improves the appearance of common skin conditions such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, keratoses or other pigmentary problems. MicroLaserPeel™ is suitable for anyone considering dermabrasion, chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing treatment, but have little time for a long recovery process. The treatment is customised for your specific skincare needs.

The MicroLaserPeel™ Procedure

During the MicroLaserPeel™ procedure, a special epidermal peel is applied to the face that ablates the damaged outermost layer of skin to reveal smoother, healthier, younger-looking skin underneath with more uniform skin tone and texture. Multiple treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart are usually required to achieve the most satisfactory results. MicroLaserPeel™ can be combined with other skincare treatments such as ProFractional™.

Recovery after MicroLaserPeel™ Treatment

Recovery after MicroLaserPeel™ treatment usually takes approximately three to four days. Immediately after treatment, you may experience some redness that resembles a slight sunburn that should start to fade on the third day. Some minor peeling may also occur during the recovery process. You can start wearing makeup again on the fourth day.

elōs® FotoFacial™ IPL

The elōs® FotoFacial™ technology is a treatment that rejuvenates skin and improves the signs of sun damage and ageing, such as brown spots, red blotchiness from spider vessels or rosacea, uneven or rough skin texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. Acne scarring has also been shown to improve over a treatment series. Skin rejuvenation can be performed on the neck, chest, hands and arms.

The elōs® FotoFacial™ IPL Procedure

IPL technology is based on the same principle as laser, but instead emits a broad-spectrum of pulsed light to reach several layers of the skin at once. During the elōs® FotoFacial™ treatment, the gentle light and electric energies break up the pigment and/or blood in the tissues. Collagen production is stimulated, restoring your skin to a more youthful appearance. You may experience some discomfort during treatment. Treatments are repeated every two to four weeks and most people require four treatments. Like microdermabrasion and chemical peels, a FotoFacial™ IPL treatment can usually be performed during your lunch hour.

Recovery after elōs® FotoFacial™ IPL Treatment

Each treatment results in gradual lightening and improvement of pigmented and vascular imperfections. Temporary pinkness of your skin lasts a very short time. Most people are able to return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment. Brown spots may temporarily go darker before they lighten, but an improvement in brown and pink spots are usually apparent before the next treatment. Improvements in skin texture are noticed towards the end of the series of treatments.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

In addition to microdermabrasion, dermabrasion, and chemical peels, laser resurfacing is an economical and effective way of improving skin texture and reducing facial lines. Laser resurfacing technology is rapidly improving with greater control being achieved with fewer side effects. Different types of lasers can now be selected for different skin types. CO2 and Erbium lasers are used for diminishing lines and wrinkles, while others treat spider veins and vascular lesions, unwanted hair, and pigmentation problems.

The Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure

Laser resurfacing involves the use of one wavelength of light to remove the damaged top layers of skin. This causes regeneration of your epidermis and dermis as well as collagen remodelling and shrinkage. The treatment may be performed either on the whole face or for isolated problem areas. It is usually performed with a sedative to make you drowsy, with or without anaesthetic depending on the extent of the procedure.

Recovery after Laser Skin Resurfacing

After laser skin resurfacing, new skin begins to form immediately underneath the treated area. It may be red at first, but will gradually subside to a pinkish colour over the following weeks to month. You should be up and about immediately, but plan on taking it easy for a week or so. It is important you avoid activities that are strenuous or dirty. Occasionally, full healing may take three to six months. You will be able to wear makeup after seven to 10 days but should wait about two weeks before returning to work.
