Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an injection procedure that can greatly reduce and/or remove unsightly spider veins which develop on the face or legs. Spider veins tend to be a red or purple in colour. The problem is usually hereditary and often occurs with pregnancies, taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, and in people whose jobs require standing all day. You can help minimise the development of spider veins with regular exercise, weight control, and wearing support stockings while working. Sclerotherapy at Silkwood Medical is limited to spider veins, however, if larger blue veins and/or varicose veins are noted a referral will be made to an exceptional practitioner specializing in larger vein therapy utilizing stronger sclerosing solutions or endolaser therapy.

The Sclerotherapy Procedure

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosant solution directly into the vessel to be treated. At Silkwood Medical, we utilize Aethoxysklerol, NOT SALINE, for maximum efficiency and patient comfort. The vessel reacts to the fluid by constricting and eventually shutting down. With time the vessels fade and gradually become invisible. Treatment sessions are usually 30-45 minutes. Improvement is noticeable within a couple of weeks from the first treatment. However, depending on the prominence and number of vessels treated, several sessions three to four weeks apart may be required. Avoiding this treatment around your period is advised for best comfort and minimal bruising.

Recovery after Sclerotherapy

There is minimal pain involved, but you may experience minor bruising from this procedure. You should not need to wear supportive stockings after treatments and may return to work immediately. Heavy exercise is discouraged the day of treatment, but may be resumed the next day.
