Although cosmetic surgery is very popular among women, more practices also address the aesthetic concerns of men. Many procedures offered at our Sydney practice, such as rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, and liposculpture, can benefit both sexes. Gynaecomastia treatment and calf implants that are specifically designed to enhance the masculine form are also available at Silkwood Medical in Sydney.
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, for men requires an understanding of the differences between attractive male and female aesthetics and the ability to translate this into operative technique. Male and female eyelids are very different. Males traditionally have lower brows and flatter, fuller upper lids than females and the worst thing that can occur in male upper eyelid surgery is "feminisation" of the eyelid. Minimal incisions and a sound understanding of male aesthetics will ensure a natural-looking result.
Blepharoplasty provides a more rested and rejuvenated facial appearance. The procedure involves removing excess skin folds and reducing bulges, making the area around the eyes smoother and firmer. Incisions are concealed within the natural creases of the eyelid and once healed, they are barely noticeable.
Blepharoplasty is generally performed under general anaesthesia, but in some cases, a local anaesthetic may be used in combination with a sedative.
While you are recovering from blepharoplasty, you will usually feel well enough to be up and about, but plan to spend around seven to ten days relaxing and avoiding any strenuous activity. After this time, if you are feeling well and no complications have arisen, you may resume normal activity and return to work.

The desired result in male rhinoplasty is a well-balanced, attractive masculine nose with a natural bridge and well-shaped tip. Rhinoplasty can reshape your nose in a number of ways to improve its appearance and proportion in relation to other facial features. Rhinoplasty can also correct certain types of breathing problems.
Rhinoplasty is usually performed via small, carefully concealed incisions inside or along the creases under your nose. By adding or reducing bone and cartilage, surgeons can reshape your nose and create a more balanced, aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Breathing problems that result from a deformity in either the septum (the strip of cartilage through the centre of your nose) or the sidewalls of the nostrils can be addressed by adjusting these structures and improving support. This procedure can be performed at the same time as a cosmetic rhinoplasty.
General anaesthesia is used for rhinoplasty surgery. Following the procedure, you should be up and about in a day or two, but take it easy for the first week. Most people can return to work in seven to ten days.

Males respond well to liposculpture of the neck, abdomen, flanks and "love handles". Men tend to carry fat within their abdominal cavity (around their organs such as the liver, stomach etc) and beneath the skin. Liposculpture involves the removal of fat beneath the skin only, and this results in a leaner, more sculpted masculine appearance.
Liposculpture, another word for liposuction, is performed by inserting a thin tube attached to a vacuum pump through tiny incisions into pockets of fat beneath the skin. These small, localised fat deposits are removed with suction, leaving the area firmer and smoother. Modern techniques allow our surgeons to remove a substantial amount of fat with liposculpture, but it is important to remember that this procedure is not a substitute for healthy eating and exercise habits. It aims to refine the appearance of men or women who are of a relatively normal weight, but have small areas of fat that are non-responsive to diet and exercise. It may also be used in combination with procedures like abdominoplasty for better overall results.
Please visit our liposuction page for additional information about this procedure. If you would like to schedule a consultation, or have specific questions about any of our procedures, including liposculpture, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, or gynaecomastia treatment, please contact our Sydney practice.
Gynaecomastia, or enlargement of the male breasts, is surprisingly common and affects three main groups of males. The first group consists of teenage males who have excessive glandular breast development due to an aberrant response by breast tissue to changes in hormonal levels at puberty. The second group consists of body builders who either may or may not have taken steroids to enhance their workouts. Commonly a breast button will develop beneath the areola in response to androgenic steroids. Possibly the largest group of men with gynaecomastia consists of the middle-aged, slightly obese male who develops a large fat pad in the breast region which is resistant to diet and exercise.
Depending on the underlying condition, the excess fat and / or glandular breast tissue is either suctioned out via liposuction or cut out. When it is cut out, the incisions are usually well hidden around the areola. For small amounts of fat, our surgeons may perform the gynaecomastia in the office while you are under local anaesthetic, but with larger volumes the surgery is performed at a hospital under general anaesthesia.
Recovery depends on the extent of surgery required to treat gynaecomastia. You should be able to return to work after three to four days, even with the largest reductions.
Calf implant surgery is sought by people who may have had an accident that affected their leg muscles or who were born with thin calves that do not respond to exercise. Calf implant surgery requires a thorough evaluation of your calves and how they relate to your overall body size and shape. The procedure is designed to achieve maximum improvement and natural-looking results.
Implants are inserted via an incision in the crease behind the knee, and usually consist of a large medial and smaller lateral implant. The implants are made of a malleable silicone material and look like a natural calf contour. Most calf implant surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, but depending on the extent of the surgery and your requests, local anaesthesia combined with a sedative, administered by an experienced anaesthetist, may be selected. Most calf implant surgery is done as a day only procedure.
Although you should be up and about on the same day as your surgery, bed or couch rest with your legs elevated is recommended for the first three to four days. A gradual return to normal activities will ensure the implants maintain their correct position. It may take up to four to six weeks before you can return to fast running and lower limb workouts at the gym.
Our practice offers male facelift surgery in addition to rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and liposculpture. Male facelifting requires a different approach to female facelifting, as well as an understanding of the differences in male and female aesthetics. Males cannot look pulled and stretched. Males cannot get away with the facial line and movement distortion that may occur in poorly performed facelifts. The incisions need to be as small as possible and even more hidden than in females. The L-lift or lateral SMASectomy is a superior facelift for the male patient as it provides a more natural-looking result with less skin undermining than the more commonly used SMAS facelift.

A high hairline can look unnatural, and many people feel it gives them an aged or alien-like appearance. The hairline lowering procedure creates a more harmonious, youthful facial balance by lowering the anterior hairline and reducing the show of forehead skin.
Hair grafting is another approach that addresses the high hairline, but is much more costly and time consuming. The hairline lowering procedure is more affordable and offers immediate results. Dr. Warwick Nettle was trained in this procedure by leading U.S. facial plastic surgeon Dr. Sheldon Kabaker, the "Guru" of hairline lowering.
Hairline lowering is customised to your specific needs ranging from minor to more extensive hairline advancement. The hairline lowering procedure may be performed as an isolated procedure or with other facial rejuvenation procedures offered at our practice, such as brow lift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and facelift.
This is determined by your scalp and forehead laxity – in other words how easily you can move it backwards and forwards. Usually 2-3cm can easily be achieved, often more.
A more complex, staged procedure is available for those with little scalp movement or who require advancement of the hairline by more than 4cm – this will be fully discussed at your consultation if applicable to you.
The hairline lowering procedure gives permanent improvement and does not need to be repeated.
The procedure usually takes between 1-2 hours and is normally performed either under general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation.
The hairline lowering procedure can be performed at any age, although the most common age is from early 20's onwards. There is no older age limit for the procedure.
