Breast Lift Surgery for Youthful, Enhanced Contours at Silkwood Medical in Sydney

Also known as a mastopexy, breast lift surgery is designed for women who have saggy breasts. Loss of shape and volume can occur as the tissue loses elasticity with the effects of gravity, the normal ageing process, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and significant weight loss. When the sag of the breasts is relatively minor, a breast lift may be achieved with a breast implant alone (augmentation mastopexy). In this case not only will shape and firmness be improved, but breast size will also increase.

The Breast Lift Procedure

In breast lift surgery, breasts are raised and recontoured, and the nipple is elevated so it sits in a higher position on the breast mound. There are a number of techniques used in this procedure. The technique your surgeon chooses depends on whether a small or larger lift is required and determines where the incisions are made. Dr Norris will explain these options to you. Dr Norris has trained extensively in the use of short-scar techniques, which are aimed at minimising the amount and length of the scars. The procedure usually takes two hours with a further one to two hours for recovery.

Recovery from Breast Lift Surgery

After surgery, any pain or discomfort can be controlled with medication. You should be up and about in a day or two, but plan on taking it easy for the first week. Most people can return to work in seven to 10 days. Any resulting scars fade over time. Please read through our case studies and experiences of actual patients who have undergone breast lift surgery at our practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast lift surgery is designed to raise and recontour sagging breasts. Most women have this surgery after losing a significant amount of weight or losing volume and tone in the breasts after having children. Breast lift surgery can improve appearance and comfort as well as confidence and self-esteem.

What occurs during the consultation?

Before undergoing breast lift surgery, you will have a number of consultations with your surgeon to discuss a range of options and the risks and complications associated with this procedure. A breast lift requires a thorough evaluation of your breasts and how they relate to your overall body size and shape. The skilled surgeons at our practice will discuss your goals for breast lift surgery, focusing on how to achieve maximum improvement and natural-looking results.

Will it be painful?

Most breast lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. However, depending on the extent of the procedure and your requests, local anaesthesia combined with a sedative, administered by an experienced anaesthetist, may be selected. Any post-operative pain can be controlled with medication.

Will I lose any feeling in my breasts after breast lift surgery?

Modern techniques of breast lift surgery concentrate on preservation of the nerves to the breast. It is unusual to lose any feeling in the breasts after breast lift surgery. In fact, many people report heightened pleasurable sensation in the nipple-areola region after surgery.

Is breastfeeding possible after a breast lift?

Over 95 percent of patients can breastfeed after breast lift surgery as the ducts leading from the breast gland to the nipple are preserved during the procedure. The five percent or so who cannot breastfeed after breast lift surgery probably would not have been able to breastfeed anyway whether they had had surgery or not.

Is there any way for me to reduce the impact of the scarring?

The incisions will remain red then fade to a pink colour over the first six to nine months and will eventually become a silvery/white colour. The nature of the incisions can be improved by wearing tape over the incisions or by using silastic gel sheeting. Wearing a support bra 24 hours a day (except when showering) for the first six weeks is recommended to improve incision healing and ensure long-term results.

How long after having my breasts operated on would I be able to get back to exercise?

A gradual return to exercise would involve returning to brisk walking within two to three days of surgery progressing to light jogging after around about 10 days. It would take up to six weeks before returning to vigorous swimming, upper body gym work and tennis.
