Lip Enhancement Injections
Lip enhancement injections can be used to add volume and definition to your lips and to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles around the mouth. The lip enhancement procedure is ideal if you have naturally thin lips or lips that have thinned with age or have lost their definition.
There are many ways of achieving upper and lower lip enhancement. The most commonly used methods involve injecting dermal fillers into the borders of the lips to achieve a lifting effect, as well as adding definition, and/or placing the products directly into the lips for a fuller pout effect.
There are also specific methods of structural fat grafting that can provide lip enhancement combined with a facelift. However, injectable fat has been proven to be disappointing for long-term lip enhancement due to variability in results.

Cosmetic Injections
There are several categories of cosmetic injections: Gel-type, connective tissue and paste-like fillers currently available in Australia. However, we are not allowed to use their brand names on our website. Each of these fillers have their own, unique properties and depending on your specific needs and budget, our practitioners will guide you in selecting the most appropriate treatment options.
Gel-Type Fillers:
The Gel-type filler is a carbohydrate that occurs naturally in our skin to draw and maintain the water content of our tissues. They are currently the most popular dermal fillers for several reasons: they are biocompatible (no skin test is required), they are biodegradable (the two different brands that we use last from 6-8 months or 10-12 months and sometimes longer), and they also offer hydrating properties to the areas treated, in addition to acting as a filler. They are perfect for filling deep lines and folds, and are also used to enhance the cheeks. A most popular trend is to use Gel-type fillers to smooth out the aging look of under eye hollows.
Connective Tissue-Type Filler:
It is a fibrous protein that is the primary substance that makes up our skin. Connective tissue injections are derived from cow skin, which is very similar to human, and then highly purified, however, a patch test on the arm is required for one month prior to treatment, to determine if an allergy is present. Connective tissue injections have a proven track record of over 25 years as superior option for treating fine lines and wrinkles. It will last an average of 4-6 months.
A Paste-Like Filler:
The paste-like filler is synthetically made from the costituents of bones and teeth. It is completely biocompatible and biodegradable. It is thick and white and should NOT be used superficially to fill wrinkles or to enhance the lips, rather, it is exceptional in augmenting the cheeks, lifting the deep nose to mouth (naso-labial) and mouth to chin (marionette) folds, and to enhancing a jawline or correcting some nasal deformities. This is a product that truly allows the practitioner to create structure providing a noticeable lifting effect. As it takes 12 to 18 months to breakdown, dermal stimulation occurs at the same time.

Dermal Stimulations
Over time, skin loses its tight, firm and youthful appearance and can become damaged and lose natural elasticity. This can cause your face to look thin and narrow, which makes you look older than you are. Stimulation is created by the injection of dermal stimulators under the dermis which stimulates your fibroblasts to produce an increase in your own natural collagen fibers. Starting immediately post- injection the patient participates in massaging the areas treated for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days, and repeating this process 2-3 times at 2 month intervals, depending on the need. This process increases the volume of the dermis (connective tissue), resulting in a fuller and more youthful appearance. The results last from 18-24 months. For best results, a booster treatment is recommended once a year, thereafter to maintain desired results Dermal stimulation works particularly well when combined with cosmetic injections, anti-wrinkle injections or facelift surgery.
The Cosmetic Injection Procedure
An anesthetic injection lasting 30-60 minutes is always offered when treatments to the lower face are being done, so maximum comfort is the norm. An anesthetic cream will also be used 30 min prior when treating the face away from the midline (forehead, cheeks, jawline, nose). Icy poles are brilliant for numbing around the eyes and forehead, and are also offered immediately post-treatment to minimise any bruising or swelling that might occur. At Silkwood Medical, we also offer nitrous oxide (a relaxing gas to breathe that is often offered to pregnant women in labor), if needed, for your comfort. It is perfect for those patients who are anxious about receiving injections, offering a very relaxing experience. Most treatments will be completed in a 30-45 minute appointment.
Recovery after Cosmetic Injections
Following most cosmetic injection treatments, there is little to no downtime required. Although you may feel a slight tenderness afterwards, minimal swelling or bruising may be noted for 1-3 days, typically. When having under eye hollows treated, or having dermal stimulation or cheek enhancement, slightly more bruising and swelling may occur because these injections are placed deeper to the subcutaneous levels. Any minor bruising, swelling or redness will usually disappear within a week.
