Brighter Eyes through Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Your eyes are the focal point of your face and greatly contribute to your overall facial appearance. Bags beneath the eyes, wrinkled, drooping layers of skin on the eyelids, and sagging eyebrows give your entire face a tired, angry or sad expression. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) at Silkwood Medical in Sydney’s eastern suburbs can restore a more youthful appearance by removing excess skin folds and bulging fat deposits. Sagging eyebrows that cause a tired-looking appearance can be corrected with a brow lift. Dr. Nettle is highly skilled in blepharoplasty techniques to address the specific needs of his male patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Blepharoplasty will give you a more youthful and rested appearance. The procedure involves removing skin folds and fat bulges and improving eyelid creases. Most eyelid surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. However, a local anaesthetic combined with a sedative, administered by an experienced anaesthetist, may be used. Within six weeks, the thin surgical incision will be barely visible and blend into your eyes’ natural lines and folds. Usually, no incisions are necessary on the lower eyelids.

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery

You should be up and about immediately after the surgery but plan on taking it easy for the first week. You will be able to resume wearing makeup shortly after surgery, and most patients can to return to work after seven to 10 days. On rare occasions, you may experience some tightness and stiffness, associated with dryness, sensitivity to bright light and tearing after the surgery. The intensity of these sensations and how long they last will vary according to the individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the face and restore a more youthful appearance by removing excess skin folds and bulging fat bags. Sagging eyebrows that create a tired appearance can be corrected with a brow lift. Eyelid surgery is frequently combined with laser resurfacing of the eyelids and periocular region.

How much pain is involved in eyelid surgery?
Because no major muscles are divided during the eyelid surgery procedure, pain is often minimal and easily controlled by medication. Very few patients need to take anything more than Panadol™, and even if this is necessary, it is rarely needed for more than 24 hours.

What age are most people when they have eyelid surgery?
Although ages range between the mid-30s to late-60s, the most common age for blepharoplasty is the 40s to 50s.

Are the scars noticeable after the blepharoplasty procedure?
The incisions made during eyelid surgery are hidden in crease lines, and are among the least noticeable incisions in cosmetic facial surgery. After 10 days, incision lines are barely visible, and scars continue to fade over time. Lower lid incisions are usually placed inside the eyelid, which makes them unnoticeable.

What about glasses and contact lenses after blepharoplasty?
Glasses may be worn immediately after eyelid surgery. Contact lenses should be left out for 10-14 days. Contact lenses should be inserted by pulling up on the upper lid rather than by pulling down on the lower lid.

I am a student from Hong Kong. Can I get more Western-looking eyes?
Generally, people of Asian origin do not have a defined upper lid crease compared to Caucasians, due to different muscular attachments compared to Caucasians. More Western-looking eyes with an upper lid fold can be produced during the blepharoplasty procedure.

I’ve heard about laser eyelid surgery. Is it better?
Lasers are often used in combination with other techniques for performing eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Lasers or chemical peels are best for resurfacing the lower lids to remove fine wrinkles. During your initial consultation, discuss with your surgeon which eyelid surgery technique will suit your specific needs.
